Story of an image - Number 8

I'm posting this image because it's the one that has been the most commercially successful for me so far. I submitted this to Getty Images for commercial use back in 2011, and since then a license to use it has been obtained many times since.

It has featured in daily newspapers across the world, on travel websites, in corporate brochures and other online articles. It's had a lot of visibility!

So a little about the photograph.

It was taken on the main promenade of the Spanish coastal town of Villajoyosa.

Oh useless trivia time! That part of Spain has two official languages, Castilian (Spanish) and Valencian. Most towns have two versions of their name, for example Alicante is Alacant in Valencian, Jávea is Xàbia, and Villajoysa is La Vila Joiosa. Many people refer to Villajoyosa as La Vila.

Right enough of the waffle!

Despite the vibrant summery feel to it, the shot was actually taken in the first week of April. So, lovely early spring sunshine and warm, not hot temperatures.

La Vila is not a well-known destination to British holidaymakers, but hundreds of thousands pass by it every year because it's situated between the airport in Alicante and the popular holiday destination of Benidorm.

I didn't go specifically to take the shot, I was just in the habit of carrying my camera around when out and about. Needless to say I'm glad I had it.

So what's the moral of the story. The most lucrative things offer come about by chance. Always be prepared to take a photograph, and don't be shy in making it commercially available if you feel it has something special about it.

If you are interested in the settings, it was 1/160th of a second at ISO100 with aperture at f13.

Thank you for reading.
